Because Purmerend has always had a regional function it boasted a number of markets. First of all there was the cattle market, held every Tuesday on the Koemarkt since 1612. Then there was the cheese and butter market. An order of 1641 stated that these articles were to be sold on the Marcktplein, i.e. the Kaasmarkt.
